Birmingham, AL To Host 2021 World Games!

The City of Birmingham, Alabama won the bid to host the World Games in 2021. This will be the first time they are to be held in the United States, since the initial games were held in Santa Clara, CA in 1981. The World Games are made up of some 25 sports, involving approximately 4,000 athletes from 100 countries. The governing body is the International World Games Association, comprised of 37 organizations, which includes the World DanceSport Federation. The World Games are comprised of sports that are hoping to become Olympic Sports and is therefore affiliated to the International Olympic Committee. Of particular interest to us, will be the DanceSport competitions to be held in International Style Ballroom and Latin. Dancers from all over the World will be here to compete.

The reception for the WGA search committee was held at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in downtown Birmingham and was attended by dignitaries from sports, government and business. Kim Smith represented USA Dance, the WDSF affiliate in the United States. Also in attendance was DanseSport competitor and Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Board member, Ginger Marsh. The committee was very excited to find out that Kim was also a WDSF adjudicator, which I am sure helped in weighing their decision, in addition to being impressed with the proposed facilities, the airport and the enthusiastic support being shown. Of course you cannot underestimate the renowned Southern hospitality, plus the Shrimp and Grits being served certainly didn't hurt. The English member of the team was curious and asked Kim what they were eating.

Birmingham has a lot of planning and preparations to make over the next 6 years and I'm sure a lot of exciting times to come. We can all look forward to the World descending on Birmingham and to the arrival of World Class dancing here.
